Tablas Creek Vineyard Esprit de Beaucastel 2004
The 2004 Esprit de Beaucastel is dark black-red in color, with a rich briary nose of dark red fruit (plum and currant), sweet spices (nutmeg, clove) and mocha. The elegant, layered palate shows spicy plum and cherry fruit, smoky, meaty flavors, and ripe tannins. The long finish reveals mineral and black cherry. The wine is showing remarkably well now, but should evolve elegantly in bottle for 10-15 years or longer.
Wine Advocate
The outstanding clone of the famed Chateauneuf du Pape Beaucastel, the 2004 Esprit de Beaucastel is a combination of 50% Mourvedre, 27% Syrah, 16% Grenache, and 7% Counoise. There are 3,500 cases of this beauty, which exhibits peppery, earthy, gamy, meaty characteristics intermixed with black cherry, cassis, and new saddle leather. Dense, rich, spicy, and exuberant, impressively made as well as well-balanced, it can be drunk over the next decade.

Wine Enthusiast
The winery continues to make progress with this ambitious wine, a Rhône blend of Mourvèdre, Syrah, Grenache and Counoise. The challenge has always been to move beyond simple ripeness, which is easy to achieve, into true complexity. The ’04 moves the ball forward, offering Provençal herb nuances to the cherries and cocoa.
