Wine Advocate

The 2012 Estate white with just Domaine Spiropoulos on the label and Mantinia at the bottom, is the flagship Moschofilero here, coming in at 12.5% alcohol this year. It has a bit of a tinge of color from skin contact because, said Apostolos Spiropoulos to me, "we do not do anything (like strict fining etc) to get rid of the color since we believe that first of all we lose a lot from the wine and secondly this is a wine coming from dark grapes and people should start knowing the difference." Spiropoulos has certainly emerged as a reliable Moscho producer and this is a rather interesting example in a year that Apostolos called "unique" because it went from too dry, with maturation halting, to the "grapes maturing very fast!!!! …every day that passed the sugar and color levels were going up and up...All the Moschofilero that came to the winery was BLACK!!!!!!! and very high in sugar (for Mantinia and Moschofilero)." I'm not sure the winery thinks this is a classic vision of Mantinia, but it is piercing and crisp in its youth, full bodied for the grape and very well done in its own way, with enough of the underlying minerality and crispness that Moscho lovers want. It also has surprising power as it warms. It simply grips the palate. I liked it on opening. I loved it as it aired out and warmed, taking over my palate and driving the fine fruit home. Drink now-2016.
