Trying to understand the Riesling hype? This wine is otherworldly with great concentration, strength from focused acidity. Yet, it is also light and delicate with a beautiful balance of residual sugar. Cheese? Yes!!

Wine Spectator

A vibrant, sleek version, with concentration, yet the flavors are reticent at this stage. Hints of violet, grapefruit and dried apricot peek through, but this seems to be holding back. Has a nice creamy texture. Needs time. Best from 2013 through 2035.

Score: 92. —Bruce Sanderson, April 30, 2008.

Wine Advocate

Smoky pungency, spiced pear, prunelle, and creme de cassis aromas announce the 2006 Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Auslese. An ethereal slick of pure botrytis secretions and pasted, over-ripe mango seems to coat the palate, just as its peppery, smoky pungency can’t be brushed away. Polished but (after the creaminess of so many Spatlesen) surprisingly firm in feel, this finishes with honeyed richness, intense berry sap and pungency, and underlying notes of coffee-mocha. It will certainly follow a fascinating course over at least the next quarter century.

Score: 92. —David Schildknecht, October 2008.
