From forty year old vines on southwest-facing slopes of the Letzenberg vineyard. The soil is limestone and adds to the structure of the wine. Medium bodied, the wine is full of floral, mineral and petrol notes buttressed by acidity.

Wine Spectator

A touch of almond paste mixes with flavors of apple jam, candied orange peel, black licorice and melon in this round Riesling, which is lightly juicy throughout, with a moderate, nut-tinged finish. Drink now through 2015. 250 cases made.

Score: 89. —Alison Napjus, 2011.

Wine Advocate

That a more recent nickname for the Drachenloch ("Dragon's Cave") vineyard whose fruit informs Josmeyer's 2009 Riesling Le Dragon is "little Senegal" suggests that it might have suffered from too much of this vintage's warmth and sunshine, but Christopher Ehrhart credits the water-retentive depth of Muschelkalk soil and the openness of this site (next to Zind-Humbrecht's Clos Jebsal) to breezes with keeping this Riesling juicy and holding its alcohol to 13%. Its generous apple, kiwi, and peach fruit are displayed on a soft, broad, flatteringly creamy palate, with a hint of nuttiness adding allure to the satisfyingly soothing and extended finish. Like so many Rieslings of its vintage, plan on drinking this over the next several years.

Score: 89. —David Schildknecht, May 2011.
